My Favorite Moment: The Midnight Countdown

There is nothing quite like the electric, heart-pounding energy of a room full of people collectively counting down the final seconds of the year. For Lynda and Clinton’s Carrick House wedding, the atmosphere was reaching a fever pitch as midnight approached, and I knew I needed a unique vantage point to capture the scale of the celebration. I climbed up onto the stage right next to the DJ to get a bird’s-eye view of the beautiful madness unfolding below.

Using a wide-angle lens to pull in the entire grand ballroom, I caught the exact, breathtaking second the ball dropped: Lynda and Clinton were locked in a cinematic kiss in the center of the dance floor, completely enveloped by a sea of cheering friends, ecstatic family members, and overflowing champagne flutes. 

As a Lexington, Ky wedding photographer, being able to freeze that transition from one year to the next (amidst a flurry of cheers and “Happy New Year!” shouts) was a career highlight. It wasn’t just a standard Carrick House wedding moment or a simple scheduled event; it was a visceral, shared core memory for everyone in that room that perfectly encapsulated the “party-first” spirit of the entire day.

Lynda and Clinton knew exactly what they wanted for their big day: a high-energy, unforgettable party that just happened to have a wedding in the middle of it. Right from the start, Lynda set the tone by ditching the traditional white dress for a breathtaking, floor-length black lace gown. It was the ultimate “Black Tie Glam” statement that signaled to every guest that this was going to be a sophisticated NYE blowout rather than a stuffy, strictly-by-the-books ceremony. The evolution of their ceremony was just as unique as their attire. Originally, the plan was to host a tiny, private ceremony with only the kids and their absolute closest family members. But as the planning process unfolded, Lynda and Clinton realized their community of friends and extended family was just too big and too important to leave out of the “I do” moment. They pivoted mid-way through and decided to host a full ceremony for all their guests right at The Carrick House, utilizing the stunning water feature as their backdrop.

Because it was a New Year’s Eve Carrick House wedding, the ceremony took place well after sunset, which created a beautiful but technical challenge for photography. We made the deliberate choice to skip the flash and rely entirely on the ambient light and high-end ISO capabilities of our gear during the ceremony. By doing this, we were able to capture the raw intimacy and “mood” of the moment without the jarring distraction of popping flashes during the vows. The result was a series of soulful, natural images that perfectly preserved the romantic, nighttime atmosphere of their Carrick House wedding.

Toasts, Truths, and the “Marijuana” Incident

If you want to know the true heart of a family, you don’t look at the posed portraits – you listen to the toasts. Lynda’s son stepped up to the mic and delivered what might be the most legendary, filter-free wedding speech I’ve ever heard in my career as a Lexington, Ky wedding photographer. Without missing a beat, he shared a story that had the entire Carrick House wedding reception doubled over in laughter: apparently, the very first night Clinton stayed over at their family home was the exact same night Lynda caught her son smoking marijuana.

The room absolutely erupted. It was a moment of peak “realness” that you just can’t script, and it perfectly encapsulated the vibe that Lynda and Clinton bring to the table. There are no secrets, no pretenses, and no “fake” wedding formalities with this crew; just raw honesty, a massive sense of humor, and a deeply genuine connection. 

Capturing the reaction shots during that speech was pure gold; seeing the couple and their kids laughing together at the shared history of their “merging” lives was a testament to the fact that the best families are built on a foundation of being able to laugh at the chaotic moments. It’s these kinds of authentic, unfiltered stories that turn a standard Carrick House wedding reception into an unforgettable New Year’s Eve blowout.

Custom Wine and Compassionate Details

One of the coolest and most labor-intensive personal touches I’ve seen was the dedicated wine tasting table. This wasn’t just a selection of nice bottles; Clinton actually crafted the wines himself, putting his own stamp on the evening’s festivities. To make it even more special, each type of wine featured custom labels showcasing photos from their engagement session with me, turning every pour into a conversation piece.

That sense of thoughtfulness extended far beyond the bar. Instead of a traditional gift registry filled with kitchen appliances, Lynda and Clinton opted for a much more heart-centered approach. They placed a table with a QR code at at a time near the bar, inviting guests to make donations to the Lexington Humane Society in honor of the couple’s beloved cats or drop off items for the unadopted animals. It was a deeply moving tribute to their feline family members, especially one they had recently lost. It shifted the focus from “things” to “legacy,” which resonated beautifully with the high-energy yet soulful vibe of the night.

I also have to mention their “Table Themes,” which were an absolute stroke of genius for a larger guest list. Each table featured a card that detailed exactly who was sitting there (like “The Work Crew” or “The College Besties”) but then it went a step further. Every single guest was listed on the card alongside a specific note about what the couple loved most about them or a favorite memory they shared. 

In a massive ballroom on New Year’s Eve, this made the entire Carrick House wedding feel incredibly intimate and intentional. It turned a room of over a hundred people into a close-knit gathering where every individual felt seen and valued.

Behind the Lens: Mastering the Glow

As a Lexington, Ky wedding photographer, New Year’s Eve presents some unique technical challenges, specifically when it comes to lighting.

  • The “Human Light Stand”: For the speeches and the first dances, I used one of my favorite techniques: I had my second shooter carry a light on a monopod, acting as a moveable light stand. This allowed us to get perfect directional light on the fly without being tethered to stationary gear.   • The Reception Energy: During the high-speed dancing, I switched to on-camera flash to freeze the action while letting the ambient party lights blur in the background. This was essential when Clinton suddenly dropped to the floor to do the worm – a move that completely caught Lynda (and the rest of the room) by surprise!
  • Ceremony Ambient Light: I’m a firm believer in not using flash during ceremonies unless it’s an emergency. We pushed our ISO limits to catch the ceremony by the water feature, preserving the romantic, low-light “mood” that Lynda and Clinton worked so hard to create.

The Carrick House Wedding Shot of the Night

While the midnight kiss on the DJ stage was cinematic gold, the shot that truly defines this family happened toward the very end of the night. I caught Clinton, Lynda, and her son and daughter all wrapped up together in the center of the dance floor. They were mid-dance, laughing, and completely soaking in the start of a new year as a newly official family unit. Final Thoughts (From My Lens)

Looking back through the gallery from Lynda and Clinton’s New Year’s Eve celebration, what strikes me most isn’t just the stunning black lace gown or the historic charm of the Carrick House; it’s how authentically themselves this couple remained from the first toast to the final countdown. From that hilarious, truth-telling toast by Lynda’s son to the moment Clinton absolutely floored everyone with a surprise “worm” on the dance floor, every second felt genuine, high-energy, and unforced.

What really got me was witnessing how their individual strengths complimented each other throughout the chaotic energy of a midnight Carrick House wedding.
